What makes aluminum different from steel, and from every coated metal, is not just the low weight, it is the mechanism of its protection. Aluminum protects itself. The Runoff Problem

Galvanic trouble is not limited to direct contact. Rainwater that crosses copper picks up dissolved copper ions, and wherever that water lands on aluminum it attacks the metal. A copper chimney cap draining across an aluminum roof, a copper gutter feeding an aluminum downspout, copper flashing above an aluminum valley: all of them are slow-motion failures. Every surface upstream of aluminum must be aluminum-compatible, and copper wash must be routed away from the roof entirely.

  • Rinse pollen and dust off shaded slopes every year or two. A garden hose from the ground is all the equipment the job needs

What Not to Do
